We put a lot of young people to work this summer.
ASPIRA’s #OneSummerChicago Summer Youth Employment Program brought together more than 80 youth from across the city.
Over six weeks, the Miguel Del Valle Youth Center team placed youth in positions across the organization (including IT, Communications, Finance, and Human Resources). We also found positions for young people with other employer partners including the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance.New Hope Church, Cafe Bella, HP Realty, Inc, and the Department of Aviation at Chicago O'Hare International Airport.
Participants walked away, not only with valuable work experience, but also participated in enrichment activities and a service-learning project that enhanced their skill sets.
One summer youth worker was Lizbeth Bautista, who joined ASPIRA’s Human Resources Department, learning critical skills that will help her in future positions.
Lizbeth attends Denison University and is interested in pursuing a degree in Business Administration. Over the summer, she worked with us to sharpen her communication skills, improve her organizational abilities and to learn more about insurance benefits.
After she graduates, Lizbeth plans to continue her education. “I would like continue going to school until I receive a Ph.D. After that I would hope to own my own business," she said.
One Summer Chicago brings together government institutions, community-based organizations and companies to offer more than 24,000 employment and internship opportunities to youth and young adults ages 14 to 24.
Many thanks to all of the organizations that worked with us make this a worthwhile experience for our youth. We hope to see you next summer.
